Productivity Through Android Home Screen Launchers

Android phones are super customizable. More so than those silly iPhones people use. ;-)  You can change everything from the icons on the home screen to the homescreen itself. When you change the homescreen, you’re changing the home screen launcher.

3rd party launchers give you even more flexibility to make your Android phone a productivity machine. Here are a couple of different posts talking about replacement homescreen launchers.

Something to keep in mind when you’re choosing a new homescreen launcher is, you need it to be more functional than fancy. Well, this is true if you are looking for a more productive Android. There are a boat-load of different launchers you can use to make your Android look pretty too.

ADW is one of the simplest homescreen launchers out there. There are a lot of skins available to change the look. There are some add-ons besides the skins too.

Go Launcher EX is an beautiful launcher. Go Launcher has a lot of tweaks and add-ons for it, many are free. Go Dev group makes a lot of widgets and others apps you might want to check out.

When you add a home screen launcher

You may not be prompted right away, but you can activate the new launcher by pressing the Home button. You should be asked which launcher you’d like to use.

You see the default setup for the screens. You will prolly see a few icons and some empty screens. This is where you can make your screens the way you want. Add in the icons and widgets you’d like in a manner that makes sense to you.

Power Saving Tip – Start adding icons to the middle home screen and work your way out adding new screens in alternating directions. You will get to your most used apps faster.

Use the new launcher features

Setting up your launcher is not the funnest thing to do. Most 3rd party launchers have a way to back up your work. When you are done toying around with setting up your home screens, you can back up your settings.

ADW has a cool feature called Custom shortcut. What this does is lets you add a shortcut to an action in an app. What I mean is, if you are using an app like Business Calendar, you can create a shortcut for adding an appointment. This shortcut will take you right to the add appointment screen saving you clicks.

That should be enough to get you started. If you have any questions or tips, leave a comment below.
