How Important is Helping to a Freelancer? [Freelance Friday]

The other day I was catching up on my RSS feeds.  ( I am really behind on my reading. ) I read a post on Chris Brogan’s site about being helpful. The article laid out several good ways t be helpful.

Number 2 on the list is:

Refer jobs you can’t fulfill to others so they can get some work.

But how can passing work to another freelancer or business help YOU?

Building a referral network

You can’t be all things to all people. Having a reliable person you can refer clients to or you can sub-contract work to will help you get more done. Another reason to refer work to other people is, they will likely return the favor.

Shows client you are looking out for their best interests

If you try to take on a task you are not well suited for, you may ruin future opportunities with current clients. However, if you refer them to someone who IS well suited for the task at hand, you will show them you have their interests at heart.

Client could see how great you are

Everyone does things differently. While it is good to have a backup person to go to, clients have people they prefer to work with; hopefully this is you. You have built a relationship with them, know their needs, make  suggestions to better THEIR business and they trust you. The new guy usually won’t steal them away after one gig.

How do you feel about passing along work to another freelancer?
