Yelp is a social search site dedicated to giving you the most unbiased user reviews and information about local businesses possible. One of the problems with most sites is anyone, including the business, can go on and write anything they want. This can skew the rankings and not give you a real world view of the business.

Below is a video explaining how Yelp’s filters help to give you the most accurate reviews possible. It makes a lot of sense and helps eliminate people from signing up just to pimp their business. After the video are a few tips to get you started using Yelp to help you find local search customers.

How-to Win Back Time Social Sites Steal

Many small business owners (like yourself) have no time to do anything other than the tasks they believe are moving the business forward. Adding one more thing to an already hectic work day can be a good reason not to do something. However, many times the task will take much less time than we think.

Social sites are a good example of one of these tasks. In my random talks with people, the 2 most common reasons I find owners are not using these kinds of sites are:

Get Out There And Talk To People

Many people misunderstand how to use social media; they tend to forget the social part. No matter the medium —blog, Twitter, Facebook fan page, Youtube, etc—the key is to simply talk to people.

When someone walks in the door of your business, the first thing out of your mouth is not “How can I take your money today?”

No. It is usually “Hello, how can I help?”

When starting out on Twitter, people want to know you are a valuable resource for information and can hold a conversation.

A Quick Way to Update Multiple Social Sites

Many people have more than a couple social media sites they update regularly. This can be a hassle to update each one individually. Luckily, using a service called Ping.fm allows you to update all of your social media accounts at once.

Ping.fm was recently purchased by Seesmic. This was a great deal for the end-user. Now you can post from Seesmic desktop, Seesmic web, mobile apps, SMS (text) and other ways. It is easier to get into the habit of using when you can use it, well, everywhere.

How much extra time do you have? Probably very little you deem to be available or free. There is always something needing your attention.

How can an already thinly stretched sole proprietor find time for one more activity in their day?

The obvious answer is to make time somewhere in your schedule.

The reality to this answer is, your spare time is already scarce. By adding a new task to your day, you need to eliminate something. Right?

Quick Tip – Retweeting

Quick Tip

When retweeting someone’s update on Twitter, make sure to add in your thoughts on the link you are endorsing.

It lets the author know you read their work and also lets your followers why they should take the time to read it.

Sometimes the author did not leave much room for a comment, in this case it is acceptable to write your own description of the article you are endorsing.
