I was recently watching Office Space, one of my favorite movies. The part where they are in the meeting about hiring the consultants and Lumbergh says:
“Oh, and remember: Tomorrow is day. So, you know, if you want to, go ahead and wear a Hawaiian shirt and jeans.”
It got me thinking… Do freelancers or those who telecommute have this option?
I think there is a fine line for the untethered office worker. It is all about habits. If you start slacking off on the schedule or rituals you have created for yourself, it may snowball into an avalanche of laziness.
Sure you can wear jeans and a t-shirt many days, but you need to stick to the rituals you have made. Get up at 7am, eat something, shower, get dressed and go to your the area where you have your office. Work for a couple hours then take a break, work some more then lunch…
It is no different working away from the office as it is while you are there. The projects need to be completed in the time you promised.
What do you think?
